Technology | Nine Common Causes of Corrugated Board Crushing and Corresponding Measures

Release Date:

2020-03-04

If corrugated cardboard is crushed, its compressive strength will be severely compromised, which in turn directly affects the empty-carton compression resistance of the resulting box. There are numerous causes for cardboard crushing; the following sections provide a step-by-step analysis and corresponding solutions.

If corrugated cardboard is crushed, its compressive strength will be severely compromised, which in turn directly affects the empty-carton compression resistance of the resulting box. There are numerous causes for cardboard crushing; the following sections analyze each cause and propose corresponding solutions.

Cause

1. The corrugating rolls are not parallel (corrugation is skewed);

2. Low corrugation height, or wear on the corrugating rolls;

3. After corrugation is formed, it is then flattened;

4. Excessive tension on the core paper roll;

5. Due to excessive steam spraying from the spray device, the core paper is too wet;

6. The gluing device causes the corrugation at any nip point to be flattened;

7. Uneven tension in the upper and lower conveyor belts of the double-sided machine (resulting in skewed corrugation);

8. Low, flattened corrugation;

9. The compressive strength of the core paper is too low.

Measures

1. Adjust the corrugating rolls to be parallel;

2. Replace the corrugating rolls;

3. Inspect, adjust, or repair all nip points that may cause corrugated board to be crushed, such as misalignment or improper adjustment of the cross-cut knife feed roller, presser roller, or thermal plate pressure system; excessive pressure applied; tensile stress on the single-face paper web on the bridge; or issues with the lifting conveyor belt.

4. Reduce the braking on the parent paper reel; check the position of the preprocessor;

5. Reduce the amount of steam sprayed onto the core paper;

6. Reduce the glue application gap for single-face cardboard and linerboard;

7. Maintain consistent conveyor belt speed;

8. Inspect the factors that cause corrugation flattening after corrugation formation, and identify the causes of corrugation skewing;

9. Replace the core paper roll and consult with the original paper supplier.
